The next time you shop for groceries, you may want to keep some of these tips in
mind:
- Whole-wheat bread has more vitamins, minerals and fiber than white bread.
- Craving potato chips? Eat reduced-fat popcorn instead.
- Satisfy your sweet tooth with dried fruit: raisins, dates, apricots, blueberries,
strawberries and more.
- Fruit juice is a better choice than soda, but eating the fruit itself is the best
choice.
- Instead of mayonnaise in sandwiches, use a mixture of one part reduced-calorie mayonnaise
with three parts plain low-fat yogurt.
- Breakfast idea: Instead of scrambling two whole eggs, use one whole egg and two
egg whites.
- Never go grocery shopping when you’re hungry.
- Buy the leanest ground beef available. It may cost more, but you’ll be paying for
meat, not fat.
- Boneless, skinless chicken breast is a versatile low-fat source of protein.
- Keep frozen vegetables on hand for the times you’re unable to buy them fresh.
- Canned tomatoes – whole or crushed – are a good source of vitamin C and cancer-fighting
lycopene.
- Want cookies? Try a granola bar, graham cracker, or fruit bar cookie instead.
- A healthy breakfast should consist of a high-fiber carbohydrate and some lean protein.
